Twitch continues to deteriorate as a platform because what do you mean I can’t TAB OUT TO MY SECOND MONITOR DURING THE AD BREAK

I NEED TO FOCUS THE TAB AND THE WINDOW FOR THE AD TO PLAY???

Block Twitch Ads without pausing stream Will not work in Chrome

    In Ublock Origin Dashboard

    1. My filters (tab) --> Add twitch.tv##+js(twitch-videoad)
    2. Select Apply
    3. Settings (tab) --> Scroll to bottom of page
    4. Check I am an advanced user
    5. Select the cog to the right of the text I am an advanced user
    6. At the bottom of the page, locate userResourcesLocation
    7. Change it from unset to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/pixeltris/TwitchAdSolutions/master/vaft/vaft.user.js
      • If there is already a URL: At the end of the existing URL, add a space and then the above link

Really makes you wonder the addiction people have to watching streams that they aren’t immediately leaving the service for good after seeing that.

      Fifteen million merits.

If we want to avoid this shit, we need to come up with a free, open source, ad free alternative, for everything you see doing this. The problem is, once it becomes big enough, you’ll need at least some money invested to keep it running (server, maintenance, services, etc.). And then guess what generates enough money that scales with usage. I hate this, and I reaaaaally hope there’s some other way.

I need everyone to look at what you can do with HTML5 “game engines”. You want mouse poisiton? You want to know if the mouse is in on the page or not? Internet speed? Audio card codec?

If a 13 years old using the free version of construct3 can do it, capitalism can do it.

there are many ways of detecting minimized/inactive or not. You can do setInterval throttle detection when browsers slow down JS in inactive tabs for performance reasons.

While it may be true that capitalism messes with all of them to some extent, I think there’s still a pretty wide chasm between a Firefox fork like LibreWolf or WaterFox versus just using a default install of Chrome or Edge.

Forks are great, they can fix and change small stuff, but for bigger things like Manifest or engine level changes it’s an uphill battle because those change the developer ecosystem and momentum, and changing those to your liking is possible, but most developers aren’t going to take advantage of them.

Because Browsers are corporate-built garbage which are designed with corporate interests in mind, same reason they choose to send good fingerprinting canvas data instead of sending randomized garbage every new session.

It’s been a standard feature for a very long time I’m kind of surprised they’ve only just started making use of it but this kind of thing.

A lot of sites that play sounds will stop when you tap out of them otherwise they’re just plain sounds in the background and that’s kind of annoying.

And it’s not a bad feature to have for the functionality of some sites. It’s just that as with any feature/rule/etc it can be abused. So a toggle like (according to a comment above) some plugins add is an unfortunate necessity.

Why do they keep shooting themselves in the foot? Will enough people put up with this shit to keep them in business?

I dunno, I haven’t looked at the site in probably five years or longer, but maybe they think they can hold out long enough that the next generation will just accept this is how it is? Is that the plan?

it does but with Twitch it’s a constant battle. you can go for days or weeks on end and it’ll work great then boom a few days to a week and it won’t work anymore until the maintainers figure out yet another way to circumvent twitch ads.

It just got to a point for me where I just stopped using twitch. I mean the site overall and the content/streamers have just gotten a lot worse in the past few years and there’s really nothing on there anymore worth watching.

Sorry but that’s just wrong. Ads on Twitch are forced in a way that can’t be easily bypassed locally. That’s why stuff like Twitch AdSolutions exists. The common workaround is using a proxy server in countries that don’t get ads, maybe you live in one of those.

I used to support testing the adblock solutions from Pixeltris some years ago when Twitch actively starting fighting adblockers. It turned out the only reliable way is to use a proxy or VPN of a country that doesnt serve ads via amazons ad system. Mostly small countries where it’s not worth place advertisments. I am using eithe czech, polish or Luxembourg IPs and usually dont get any ads this way anymore as there are no corporstions using their af service.

Yeah that’s true but it’s really just a method to run a more complex userscript, which isn’t really comparable to the element blocking rules that uBlock normally handles.

Those are so atrocious. I just found out the closest gas station near my house installed big ass screens on the pumps that are bigger than my largest tablet and have impressively loud speakers. The station previously didn’t have any video screens so when I passed by the screen to unscrew the gas cap, and it started blasting the ad I nearly jumped out of my skin.

I don’t have a clue where another gas station without the ad screens even is. Blegh 😮‍💨

Seeing those was one of the more dystopian experiences I had when visiting the US a while back. The entire concept was absolutely insane to me.

What maybe surprised me the most is that they weren’t vandalised. Like, if my nearest gas station had one of those you can bet that I would get a ski mask and go smash them up at night when the station was closed. After a couple rounds I can only assume they would get the message and stop installing them. I’m honestly surprised that people doing just that isn’t more common in the US.
