There are only two servers I regularly hang out on. I think it’s no coincidence that both of them are very low moderation. People are relaxed so they chat way more in those spaces.
Having channels is fine, but worrying about everything staying on topic perfectly and micromanaging it chills discussion I’ve noticed.
The one discord server I tried to be active in has rooms for damn near every conceivable topic and the mods heavily enforce using the channels to the point you can not have an actual, generic conversation in any of them because they will naturally change topics over time and then the mods will force you into another room or mute you. It’s stupid as fuck.

They have played us for absolute fools.
Matrix doesn’t support sorting channels into a defined order.
Element doesnt, but theres a lot of other clients that might.
If the protocol doesn’t support it, then the sorting can’t be communicated to other clients. That means everyone has to individually do the work to sort them.
This is why I can never really get into active participation on discord. I usually join a server for its specific theme (i.e. the Dune server), so I’m on there just to talk about Dune. But there’s tons of channels in there too (i.e. memes, music, etc.), and each and every server I join has the same general channels. I can’t manage to keep track of the same kind of channel for 20+ servers, so I end up only participating in the main/general channel of every server I’m in.
It’s like they want to turn a chatroom into a forum.
