The main reason is to use an open-source system. The secondary reason is to achieve greater digital sovereignty and reduce dependence on US technology companies.

Brave is asking for money to remove the bloatware it has added over the years and to be able to use the original browser it first released.

I don’t usually take the software creator’s ideology into account if it works well on my computer. However, I stopped using Brave when I found out that it’s a company funded by Peter Thiel, the founder of Palantir and one of the most toxic investors around today. The combination of Brendan Eich and Peter Thiel has now pushed me past the point where I can separate software from its creator’s ideology.

I’ve used Manjaro and, over time, it’s left me without GRUB and without a graphical interface on several occasions – just as has happened with CachyOS, EndeavourOS, Arcolinux, and others. That’s why I no longer use Arch or Arch-based distributions. I admit that, in my opinion, Manjaro is the best Arch-based distribution, provided you don’t install anything from the AUR repository. The problem is that Pamac and some of Manjaro’s own tools don’t follow Arch’s dependency rules, so that mix of Manjaro’s own repositories and Arch’s original repositories can be a problem.

Distributions of corporate origin such as Ubuntu, Leap, Fedora, etc., i.e. distributions that exist because there is a company supporting the development community. More specifically, is it more advisable to use a distribution supported by a company that contributes a large part of the system’s development?

If you want technical support, of course you do. Just because a code is open source does not mean it should be free. Developers need to eat too. Another issue is that there are distributions such as ZorinOS that charge money for the right to use a pro version, when in reality it is the same version that you can configure yourself and that ZorinOS belongs to a company, not a user community.

I always use and recommend hardened Firefox + Ublock. As a search engine, I use Qwant, which is based in the EU and uses its own search engine whenever possible rather than Google, Bing, etc. And there is another reason not to recommend using Brave. Among its investors is Peter Thiel, the most controversial figure in the investment world. Search for Peter Thiel’s controversial statements in your favourite search engine and you will see for yourself.
