I must’ve been desensitized at the age of 10 because that scene didn’t faze me much. The whole movie was friggin weird. I’m a girl. I think boys liked that movie more than girls did.
I saw the movie for the first time when I was 5, and I mostly loved it, except that this scene was extremely traumatic for me. I’m also a girl.
I hadn’t really considered that there might be a gender divide over this film, but it does make sense that boys would identify more with a male protagonist. I’m an elementary teacher, and I do see that kids are more likely to engage with stories that have protagonists of their same gender.
I’ve never watched that movie and only saw this scene for the first time a few months ago. I feel that I missed out on a crucial part of childhood trauma
