In the category of “quirky and iconic but affordable sports car just a few years old at the time of the plot” there’s probably only one obvious choice for 1995: Mazda MX-5
As I recall, they used to be more similarly priced. Like I remember being flabbergasted at how cheap the Elise was compared to my expectations. I was expecting something more like $60-80k but they were like $30-40k. Miata was a bit cheaper but not by a huge margin.
Though it was a bit different because the Miata was more of a comfort sports car while the Elise was more of a racing sports car with bare minimum interior. Though that makes it sound even better for Doc Brown to tinker with because he wouldn’t have to strip out as much to fit his extra stuff in.
Oh another option just occurred to me, though I don’t recall the specifics, but wasn’t John Titor’s time machine mounted in a vehicle of some sort? His story timeline matches up fairly well with this BTTF remake idea, though iirc he left from the 30s rather than the 20s, and I think his wasn’t closely integrated with the vehicle (like I seem to recall he had said something about swapping the vehicle it was in during his journey). Could update the method from flux capacitors to virtual black holes and even show that laser bending trick (where all other light mysteriously isn’t affected by whatever is affecting the laser lol) as a satirical nod to whoever did that hoax.
The more important question, what car would be the one modified ti become a time machine?
Based on the stainless steel body requirements, I know the answer and I don’t like it.

Yeah, remember Doc Brown’s reason for choosing the DeLorean was because, “If you’re gonna travel through time, you ought to do it in style”.
Cybertruck is not style unless you are a brain-rotted seven-year-old.
Maybe a Rivian? You’d have to come up with a different issue other than the car not starting, like the difficulty of charging it or something.
Except DeLorean’s reputation was as unreliable and lame.

Yeah, my thought was either a Miata or maybe go a bit more exotic and go with the Lotus Elise (first released in 1996).
Lotus Elise would almost have been a perfect fit, if it had been a little less expensive and released a couple of years earlier.
