Protection through obfuscation is not real protection. This has been an ongoing thing in the security world and is especially relevant for software. All obfuscation does is protect you from script kiddies (which AI isnt) and make the actual process slower for legitimate users. Like all DRM it only really hurts the people legitimately using your software.
Fun fact - terms and conditions are not legally binding. They are only a guideline that you must follow to use the product; so long as said terms and conditions abide by law, and they only apply going forward so long as the consequences for breaking the terms and conditions are also legal. In other words they can’t make you do anything - they can only tell you what they will do if you violate the terms, and they can’t make you, the user, do anything.
If a court one day says that you legally own the games you buy, all of these terms and conditions are legally null and void, and the company is in violation of the law if they revoke access.
Edit: in addition, if you buy a product in the US and sign a version of a contract (terms and conditions) and they change the conditions you are only beholden to the original conditions unless you consent to the new conditions. If you own the product they cannot take it away from you. This is why they are so insistent on you not owning anything.
You just jumped to a critical extreme and thought you made a good point? They often say the moment you bring up Hitler you lost the argument.
And once again, you are conflating the goal and the path.
“He wanted to make Germany great” is the goal. “By getting rid of all the undesirables” is the path. The goal is good. The path is bad.
Take a step back, calm down, and think instead of having extreme knee-jerk reactions to everything. Admitting there is something else besides 0 and 100 and that nuance exists would be a great start.
Edit: And before anyone tries to put words in my mouth, the goal mentioned above was probably not Hitler’s goal. I do not support any of his human rights violations or his well-known ideologies. (I simply do not know enough about his lesser known ideologies or motives to make an educated assessment). Hitler was bad. Nazis were and are bad. The Tesseract developer did not kill millions of people.
Silencing thousands of people and communities was NOT the goal - don’t get that wrong. The goal was to give users a place where they didn’t have to deal with trolls and the negativity of the world. Silencing users and instances without telling anybody or giving them the ability to toggle that on and off is completely off the correct path.
The goal was great, but you were going backwards. Just because you had a good goal doesn’t mean you were walking the right path to get there. There definitely needed to be some self reflection here, both from the guy that though putting a DDoS into the software was in any way a good way to prove you stood on the moral high ground and from the communities that thought death threats were the appropriate response to this situation.
While they have an official app for Arch, this functionality is not yet available on that flavor of distro.
Proton is fine.
The CEO has said some troubling things, but the products themselves are fine for now. It is one thing to be cautious, but it is a problem when you use the ramblings and comments of an executive as an excuse to ignore how the company actually operates.
If it were like the MyPillow guy I could understand, but we are not there.
The venn diagram doesn’t need to be perfectly overlapping circles. When open source is not a viable option or you need something beyond the scope of what open source offers, the next best thing is to use a product from a reputable company that has been properly audited and has not completely enshittified.
Now, whether Proton is truly that company is up for debate. The CEO has made some pretty troubling comments, but the products themselves have not devolved all that much. You can probably find better than Proton, but you can absolutely find a hell of a lot worse.
Their valuation was made based on the potential for every company to be using the product. No other companies outside of Musk-owned ones are valued that way. Many are valued on the average of a few years of revenue multiplied by 10.
It is blatant corruption and market manipulation. Anybody investing in such a company should expect to be holding bags within 24 hours.
I use a NAS for backup and I am always concerned about the backup being in the same physical location as the primary. I still haven’t figured out the best way to resolve that.
