Yeah idk how the investors could be so dumb. Well, I mean, I do. But still. Exactly as you said, AI companies can just… Steal the data they want. Sooo

First off, that’s a difference of 0.8M, not 1.8M. So you’ve got that significance overestimated by more than 100%.
The stock dropped 22%, which a metric missed by 1.48% does not at all explain. I don’t think it’s substantial at all. They essentially hit the target. Meanwhile revenue was $70M more than expected, which would be the main value of users anyways (aside from data selling, but then of course we get into the other factor…) So how does that possibly equate to 22% price drop? It could only be because the AI partnerships were essentially the only concern. Hence why I said the only value was human UGC. Because AI corps aren’t willing to pay for that UGC, Reddits value plummets.
I’m talking about the annoying trend of stock market articles to try to explain things that hardly make sense. It’s trying to make it sound like reddit’s user count is in trouble when it’s clearly not.

"What’s behind the move: The user discussion platform company’s latest earnings report did not announce any new artificial intelligence data licensing agreements, disappointing investors who were expecting more revenue opportunities from AI partnerships.
Revenue of $804.9 million beat estimates of $731.8 million. However, US daily active users came in at 53.2 million, just shy of expectations of 54 million. The company’s total daily active users grew by 18% to 130.3 million versus estimates of 130.07 million. "
Lmao. 53.2 vs 54, and the headline says that’s why it’s tumbling? Nah, it’s gotta be just the AI. I bet most of the reddit investors were also invested in AI stock and wanted to use reddit to pump the others. Hilarious. The entire value of Reddit is human UGC.
Lemmy is way too small for me to be seeing the amount of reposts I do

That isn’t the part that’s supposed to be funny, though. The joke is fundamentally about the linguistic ambiguity of “would you like to dance” typically implying “with me”. It’s something most people take for granted. So like, presented in a standup format the joke would be something like:
“Have you ever noticed that if someone asks you if you’d like to dance… They’re not saying anything about dancing together? (Audience chuckles)”
You could even structure the joke in such a way that it doesn’t involve someone being a jerk, maybe you’d find that more palatable. E.g:
“So anyways, one time at the club this gorgeous lady asks me if I’d like to dance. And I’m thinking, well, sure I guess. So I went up to the floor and started… (Comedian dances ridiculously, audience laughs). And when I look back at her she looks at me like I just killed her dog or something! (Audience in shambles) and that’s when I realized… Oh! You meant like… (Comedian points back and forth between himself and audience)…together? Well why didn’t you just say so?! (Audience collectively dies from laughter)”
If you couldn’t tell I don’t really like standup, lol. But the point is that the joke isn’t about misleading someone or being a jerk. Its fundamentally a language joke.

Idk he can just make a new account using a private frontend that does all the same blocking
It matters because tesseract was/is used by some large instances, so the tesseract dev was secretly censoring content from thousands of users without their knowledge and even without the knowledge of the instance admins. It’s a pretty big deal because this means that a lot of people on Lemmy have been getting a highly censored view of the community without realizing it. A lot of those people, probably even most of them, came to Lemmy specifically to get away from that kind of thing. So its really shady, a huge breach of trust, and this single dev has been covertly influencing thousands of people’s political exposure.
How can anyone dislike beautiful soft face fuzz 🥺🥺
I would get Pratt. The others I would recognize but not know the names lol
Speak for yourself!

It’s so crazy that this came out and is widely known and even people who know about it keep using his service while he is still CEO. Some segments of the masses are truly beyond saving. I guess Zuck wasn’t wrong about them being dumb fucks at least
I don’t think women just naturally oscillate between +/- 30 lbs?

On the plus side, it worked without internet!
So you’re saying that you can’t drive this speed limit on those roads because of the amount of traffic, right? not because of some sort of geographic feature or shape of the roads?
Yeah…hard to imagine much of a way to get traffic updates in comaps, or any OSM project honestly. It seems like it would have to be a separately maintained service. And either way, I’m guessing the number of users that would buy into something like that just wouldn’t be enough to get meaningful data most of the time. Especially since it pretty much relies on tracking people’s locations, which I feel like is counter to the purpose of most people’s reason for getting into those services.

It depends on what you use Google Maps for. For straight-up navigation, CoMaps is good. And I mean it’s good at the navigation itself for the most part. Although sometimes when you enter in an address it thinks you’re referring to the entire street. But most of my favorite restaurants and a lot of locations that have been open for a while aren’t on it, which I’ve been happy to add. Locations that have been closed for a while are still on it, which I’ve been happy to delete.
But if you use Google Maps for discovering places or looking at pictures or seeing reviews of businesses, or if you do a lot of multi-stop trips, comaps doesn’t have those features even in the littlest, tiniest bit, and in that sense there is legitimately no (Foss) competitor. For instance, if you’re out and about on a vacation and you’re trying to find a restaurant, nope, comaps is useless for that. If you’re trying to plan a trip by seeing what’s around somewhere, nope, useless for that too.
It really just focuses on navigation itself, and it does a pretty good job of that. I use it to get around when I drive.
Meaning in that sense is an ill-defined term which on careful inspection has no sensical quality. Saying life is or isn’t meaningful is like saying “life is/isn’t blwodjtnfyhc”
For real, of all the things to call a social construct, love is a pretty debatable one
I hate this “content” “”“”“creator”“”“” more than words can describe lol. He just takes sentences that were already said by other people and puts it in a caption above his dumb ass face and walks around literally making a static fucking expression, maybe sometimes pointing at the caption and that’s it, that’s all he does. And yet as you can see he’s getting millions of views. So ridiculous
The people who make this kind of argument are the same kind of people who will say that God gives you free will, even though you’ll literally be eternally tortured for doing things that God doesn’t want you to do. Some people have a real interesting idea of what “being forced” consists of lol

Human shit on the sidewalk in Brussels prob (I mean, maybe it was a huge dog I guess)
I love fashion and I think high end clothes are priced way more appropriately than anyone here probably wants to admit, and I have huge respect for the artistry and craft that goes into it. But a handbag is definitely not a much more complex piece of engineering…at best they could be relatively similar for certain bags. The price difference is because a lot of bags need more manual involvement by decently paid workers rather than factory slaves. And because the artists doing the designing also get a solid salary as that is the primary aspect of the product. Whereas monitor designs are comparatively not so demanding to dream up and not as important.
