Are you looking for a gaming laptop with a dedicated gpu or just a newer one with a faster cpu/igpu?

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Note taking app that I can link between my laptop and phone ?
1·2 months agoAh, I should’ve clarified - my notes are all over the place as "README"s or "INSTALL GUIDE"s in different folders together with the files needed to do the install in question. :)

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Note taking app that I can link between my laptop and phone ?
1·2 months agoHonestly most of my notes are just text files describing the installation process saved together with the installation files in a folder on my NAS. Not much of a note taker outside of that. I’ve heard many enjoy Obsidian though. :)

61·2 months agoCould look into self hosting an Obsidian Sync server, see this blog:
https://pinggy.io/blog/self_hosting_obsidian/Obsidian - https://obsidian.md/
edit: And you can obviously do it without pinggy’s tunnel for remote access.
If you want a privacy focused VPN then Mullvad is great.
If you want one for torrents then it’s no good.
I mean a whole lot of horror movies would end in 5-15 minutes if the victims weren’t idiots who decide to explore the obviously dangerous “thing”.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Does anyone have any experience with Sync-in for online files?English
32·3 months agoI haven’t tried Sync-in but if simple is what you want then a Synology DS225+ should get you up n running quickly.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Any distro recommendations for full pen & touchscreen support for art?
3·3 months agoAh sorry, I see you mentioned the linux surface kernel in your Zorin OS text.
You could always keep using Windows 10 even after EOL and allow LAN access but forbid internet access for the Surface in your router. That would require you to save your art to some sort of network storage before using another device to upload it to the net though.

12·3 months agoWhen it comes to Surface Pro tablets I find that going with this Kernel helps a lot:
https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surfaceSeems that LTE and Camera isn’t working properly but that the rest works:

My wife’s old gaming pc lasted 2016 - 2025 with the only upgrade being a new and larger SATA SSD. I’ve never had a gaming pc last that long before and the cost per year turned out really great.
I really hope that the consumer market get back on track before I need to make any more larger purchases.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Installing **self-hostable** services on a cloud server isn't self-hosting ???English
2·4 months agoWhat I meant with lifestyle was the fact that vegan used to mean not using any products that cause animal suffering, be it a hamburger, leather shoes or makeup tested on animals. None of it is vegan.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Installing **self-hostable** services on a cloud server isn't self-hosting ???English
51·4 months agoWhile I don’t believe IaaS to be selfhosting I do believe self-managed services on IaaS should be allowed here. It’s the same software stack and requires the same skills so both parties gain from having the discussion in the same place.
Not because I think selfhosting is a badge but because I think it makes sense to call things for what they are.But I’m an old grumpy who thinks ovo-lakto vegetarians shouldn’t have been allowed to steal the meaning of vegetarian or vegetarians steal it from vegans (and now we no longer got a word to describe old school vegans that makes it a lifestyle not a diet.)

Linux@programming.dev•Ubuntu Pro subscription - should you pay to use Linux?
7·4 months agoI take it your build is dependant on the community-maintained Universe repo?

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1452497/what-are-esm-apps-and-how-do-they-relate-to-ubuntu-proIf they already to the work for esm-apps repo then they could at least send those fixes over to the universe repo until the release version is EoL one would think. On the other hand I have no idea what lives in universe and what lives in main.
That was a rabbit hole.

193·4 months agoYou do, but not when your distro is EoL and not with livepatching to avoid reboots.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Run a NAS OS on an old Compaq laptop?English
4·4 months agoWhile splitting Compute and Storage is nice I think the main takeaway should be having your opnsense/router on it’s own physical hardware.
Having your storage separated won’t stop a Jellyfin interruption if you reboot your compute. For a NAS solution the cheap way would be a used desktop with at least 4 SATA ports, a Linux distro you’re used to and Cockpit installed.
Seems the photographer Mostafa Bassim sells his photos on gettyimages:

I imagine going through a “setup your own mail server guide” such as https://www.linuxbabe.com/mail-server/setup-basic-postfix-mail-sever-ubuntu will give you the basics or at least enough to allow you to ask the correct questions to get the answers you want.
It has short explanations of what the different DNS records do (A, MX, PTR, etc) and such woven into the guide.
