That’s what I’ve done for years. Makes managing things much easier, and I run multiple APs (all with the same SSID/PSK) and you can just roam to the best one. One upstairs, one downstairs, one in the weird dead zone in my office, and one on the back patio (it’s not hardwired and uses the mesh connection for uplink).
These are all old Aruba APs running OpenWRT but that’s the plan for this Cudy Model. I may pick up a few more and just replace all of my trusty but very old Arubas.
I bought this one last month when it was on sale for $39: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BRK3CYY3
Haven’t deployed it yet, but it’s fully supported by OpenWRT. I would only be using it as an access point, though. My router is a USFF Optiplex with an extra NIC and runs OpenWRT.
I used to have one of those. Think it was 600W on highest setting. Only problem with it was it was tiny and barely anything fit in it. Pretty sure it was meant for RVs but it was $10 at a garage sale and I needed a microwave at the time.
Can confirm, lol. For breakfast, I heated up some leftover spaghetti and meatballs I made last night, and 5 minutes at 60% was the perfect amount.
I’ve largely moved to using the air fryer / toaster oven to heat things up, but the biggest “life hack” for microwaving is doubling the time and halving the power. That, and stirring halfway through.
No idea, but once I was feeling extra awkward and started singing along with the rest of them.
Did you know? Chuck Norris never actually did push-ups. He would just push down and the earth would move.

1·2 months agoAnd the trend of that same design trickling down to FOSS projects because “that’s what people want, apparently” is also (mildly) infuriating.

14·2 months agoAs a current web developer I’m with you except for the tables. I hate tables with a burning, fiery passion.
I do like responsive design to account for mobile, tablet, and desktop so I try to blend that with classic “just works / just here for the data” layouts and generally minimize the flash in favor of the content. In other words, my projects go to a lot of work to look that simple lol.

601·2 months agoNo one seems to know exactly what “modern” means when it comes to “modern design”. If you ask ten different developers, you get 11 different answers.
My rule of thumb when I see “modern design” touted as a feature is that the developer chose form over function at every turn.

TIL and nice bit of trivia!

Solarpunk technology@slrpnk.net•Aferiy P280 review: A multifunctional power station that I'd use for emergency backup
4·3 months agoNice. I’ve got the Anker version but it’s half the capacity at 1 KWh. It charges exclusively from 800W of PV input (though it can only handle 600W input) and can push out 2,000 W continuous and 3000 peak.
I’ve got a splitter from the PV that goes to both the Anker and a DC-DC converter which then goes to a few 12v -> USB power delivery adapters. Those can use the excess from the PV to charge power banks, phones, laptops, etc while the rest goes to the Anker (doesn’t seem to affect the MPPT unless there’s basically just no sunlight at all). Without the splitter, anything above 600W is wasted until I expand my setup later this spring.
All I can say for it is that it absolutely rocks! On sunny days, I run my entire homelab from it, my work-from-home office, charge all my devices, and run my refrigerator from it if I feel like running an extension cord). It’s setup downstairs, so I also plug my washing machine into it and can get a few loads of laundry done as well.
All from its solar input.
Personally, I love that layout.
I’m always at a loss for what to put up as wall decorations, and I hate rats nests of cables. Win-win!

Linux@programming.dev•Systemd Founder Lennart Poettering Announces Amutable Company
274·4 months agoThe irony of Lennart “let’s change everything about Linux because I know better” Poettering creating a company called Amutable is not lost on me.
But also, that tracks because now it’s “I know better so now you can’t change anything” which is pretty on brand.
Love when people spread the love on their last day.
At an undisclosed time in the past, I worked at a call center for a big, horrible bank. I hated it but didn’t plan on quitting until I got off of a heartbreaking call around 10 in the morning. That call/situation broke me as a person, so I knew I couldn’t work there anymore. My plan was to work until my lunch at 1:00 and then just not come back.
From 10am to 1pm, anyone who wanted an overdraft or other fee refunded got it; no questions asked. Even if they didn’t ask for it, I was like “oh, I see you have a few overdraft fees from a couple weeks ago. I’ll go ahead and refund those to you as a courtesy”.
In those 3 hours, I think I refunded close to $1200 in fees for who-knows-how-many people. That’s probably not possible now since even back then they had a primitive “AI”-like system that you had to go through to issue refunds. But it was still in beta then so we still had access to the old system to do them manually. I’m guessing that new tool got pushed to production real quick after my last day.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•What next, power supply shortages?
1·4 months agoThat’s why I’m planning on investing in a solar+battery system for my home this spring. Well, that, and because my electric rate keeps rising.

They have a lot of DRM-free options and let you download a clean epub, but like with other stores, it’s up to the publishers whether (and/or when) they can sell them without DRM BS.
I like being able to download the epubs directly so I can put them on my Calibre-web instance and pull them to my Kobo or my phone or whatever I want to read on.
