Are they? I would think there are more cat owners than dog owners, because a lot of apartments aren’t great for dogs. But I don’t really know. And I guess dogs could be rarer AND more popular.

Ah, I just looked, and there seems to be almost twice as many cats as dogs in Paris. (From what I understand, those are the numbers for pets, stray cats are not included.)

Ah, is that right? Well, shut my mouth. oO
But, come on now, my friend-- you know what I’m talking about when it comes to the trope / belief about Parisians loving dogs, right…?

Eh, I’ve only been to Paris twice, sadly-briefly, so basically I’m an idiot about La belle France. Much less the beautiful provinces. 😅

No, I genuinely have no idea, but I am curious now.

Oof, I guess I might be completely busted upon that?

The second and last time I visited belle France, some years ago, the various literature I read ahead of time repeatedly talked about how ‘Parisians loved their doggies.’ That view has only been reinforced by later stuff I’ve read, across the years.

Strangely (and I must admit), I didn’t really see many doggos in Paris at the time, so… c’est quoi, cette histoire ?

So yeah, I’m still very unsure where the facts lie, but in compensation for wasting peoples’ time upon my nonsense, here’s a French-American understanding that maybe all can enjoy:

Well, you might still be right in a way, I found an article that says that Paris has a high dog density compared to others big cities. I would guess that it’s (at least partly) a side effect of the fact that Paris is dense in humans, since it’s small for a capital — suburbs are not part of Paris itself.

But I’m pretty sure that in France, dogs (and pets in general) are more common in smaller cities and in the countryside, and that makes sense since it’s a lot easier to have a dog if you have a house with a backyard, or even just a larger apartment. And I guess that’s the same in most countries? We could say that those Parisians who are dog-owners must indeed love their doggies if they’re willing to share their small living space with them. :-)

              Thank you for the music!
