“Those dirty barbarians attacked us first! So, naturally, the only option is to justly defend ourselves by conquering their land and enslaving half their population. It’s for the greater good.” - Rome

<Chuckles> the Dakotas are in danger. And Wisconsin is safe, since they only thing they have is cheese, and we have more cheese. Iowa, you can be safe though, as long as you continue produce bacon in tribute.

lmao, I can give a little more info, but it’s pretty self-explanatory I feel!

The Roman Republic and Roman Empire were a famously expansionist polity, and even neighbors who were ‘friends of Rome’ were generally in a position of effective vassalization, and often absorbed completely by Rome when the opportunity presented itself.

While Rome was surprisingly good at earning the loyalty of provincials after a generation or so, it was a bit of a situation of “No better ruler, no worse neighbor.” As long as Rome didn’t control a region, its tendrils would always be grasping at any pretext - generally not enthusiastically welcomed by the present inhabitants!

Your history memes and explainations are some of my favorite posts on the fediverse! I love the little micro history lesson that accompanies each meme. It’s like a history meme kinder egg, and they always brighten my day.

        Thank you!
